July 18, 2026 Conestogo River

St Jacobs

The wildfire smoke eased slightly this weekend, so we took the opportunity to bike along the Conestogo River in St. Jacobs. A heron in the middle of the river welcomed us to the trail

It’s a lovely trail that follows the water and for a long section you’re floating between the river on one side the the mill race on the the other.

The Mill Race trail ends at a dam outside the village, and this is always covered in litter. This weekend was no exception. For over 40 minutes we removed three large bags of debris from the shore: fishing lures, plastic bottles, Styrofoam boxes, and various bags and other debris, disposing of them before they could break down into microplastics downstream.
