Heart ❤️

Heart party confetti

September at Riverside Park. The air is crisp, the river runs lower after summer droughts, and the crowds are thinning out.

The party confetti, however, is still here.

We were on this same riverbank in July, picking metallic plastic out of the grass blade by blade. Two months later we spent two days on two more visits doing the same thing.

Most of it is the usual metallic dots, turquoise and magenta, scattered through the grass. One piece was a foil heart about the size of a toonie, still bright. Riverside is a well-loved park ❤️. That’s why there’s confetti in it. We just wish it were paper or leaf confetti instead — it still shows love, and it breaks down when it inevitably washes into the Speed River.

In addition to the confetti, we picked up the usual discarded debris (candy wrappers, food containers, cigarette butts, pants) from bushes and shores, 2 kg of rubbish in total, and diverted 22 recyclables to the blue bin.

Hand holding confetti for removal from park grass

On September 20th we’ll be cleaning downstream from Riverside Park. Join our community cleanup and we’ll celebrate together — possibly with confetti.
